Why The Real Threat Isn’t Trump
A Psychotherapist's Concern Over Divisive Social Media Rhetoric
As a licensed mental health professional, I increasingly witness the psychological toll of our fractured political climate. My writing seems to have been influenced by this, and even more so over the past month. Today’s divisive social media rhetoric—on all sides—follows dangerous patterns history warns us about: not ideology, but deeper psychological manipulation that harms individuals and communities.
It is larger than any individual. It’s systemic.
Weapons of The Mind - How Division Becomes Harm
Historical periods of immense suffering, including the rise of the Third Reich, offer chilling lessons about rhetorical strategies that psychologically prime populations for serious harm. Today’s divisive rhetoric, particularly on social media, uses strikingly similar mechanisms. Please be mindful of these strategies:
The “Enemy Within” fosters paranoia and pushes us to view neighbors with different views as existential threats rather than fellow citizens and community members with families and children. This constant vigilance corrodes healthy communities.
Moral Panic about cultural decay creates perpetual anxiety, framing social change as a horrific catastrophe and driving desperate searches for authoritarian solutions. This suppresses individual expression and critical thought in the larger system.
Conspiracy Theories about shadowy elites create epistemic uncertainty—not knowing what’s true—eroding trust in scientifically verifiable information and invalidating the lived experiences of others. This disorientation increases susceptibility to authoritarian figures claiming “true” knowledge and having THE answer.
Glorified Past Narratives prey on nostalgia and discomfort with change, keeping people locked in discontent about the present rather than adapting to our current challenges.
Dehumanization through language like “vermin” or “animals” triggers moral disengagement, (“othering”) making discrimination, demonization, and violence easier to justify while instigating chronic stress and trauma for targeted groups.
Us vs. Them Mentality shatters common humanity, fostering tribalism and chronic stress as our homes and the world become an ideological battlefield rather than a shared community.
Anti-Establishment Rhetoric weakens civic responsibility and encourages passive over-reliance on singular “heroic” leaders, creating learned helplessness that makes democratic institutions and populations vulnerable to authoritarian control.
The Psychological Fallout We Can’t Ignore
We're witnessing direct psychological fallout: soaring anxiety and depression linked to pervasive political stress, fractured families and communities, increasing hate speech, and growing despair about the future. This rhetoric isn't just political discourse—it's a psycho-social contagion undermining our collective well-being.
Moving Forward
As mental health advocates and citizens, it’s our responsibility to recognize these warning signs and actively resist narratives that divide, dehumanize, and instill fear. Our response requires modeling critical thinking, engaging mindfully with diverse perspectives, and choosing empathy over division.
Protecting our collective mental health means fostering understanding and robust democratic engagement, and assertively defending the foundational principles of a healthy democracy.
Our psychological well-being—and our future—depends on it.
