This week, the world learned something deeply painful about César Chávez. A New York Times investigation revealed allegations that the late, renowned labor leader sexually abused girls and raped his longtime organizing partner, Dolores Huerta. (NPR) For millions of people — particularly members of the Mexican American and farmworker communities — this was not merely a news story. It was a psychic rupture.
As a psychotherapist, I have witnessed this kind of rupture before, both in my office and in the broader culture. The unmasking of a revered figure triggers a very specific and recognizable form of heartbreak and collective grief — one that deserves to be named, understood, and held with compassion.
